Mobile App: User Acquisition

Business type
Mobile app
Platform
Google Ads (App campaigns)
Objective
Registered, active users
Main KPI
Cost per activated user

Concept study — not a client result. This is an illustrative strategy for a fictional business. It shows an approach to the problem, not an executed client campaign.

The brief

A fictional mobile app wants to acquire users who go beyond installing and complete a meaningful first action. The planning focus is registration and activation, with retention considered before scaling.

The challenge

Low cost per install can hide low-quality acquisition. Install volume alone does not show whether people understand the app, complete onboarding, or return.

The proposed strategy

Define an event sequence: install, first open, registration, activation, and a meaningful downstream action. Establish measurement reliability and collect enough quality signals before choosing deeper optimization goals.

Campaign structure

Organize acquisition around the app’s core value proposition. Avoid fragmenting limited budgets across too many campaigns. Align creative, store listing, and onboarding so each tells the same story.

Creative direction

Demonstrate one useful app experience at a time. Test the customer problem, the core benefit, and the first-use experience. Use clear screen recordings and honest product demonstrations.

Measurement plan

Review cost per install alongside registration rate, cost per activated user, and retention by cohort when available. Compare attribution definitions and reporting windows before comparing platforms.

Optimization decisions

If installs grow but activation remains weak, inspect onboarding and message match. If activated users do not return, investigate product fit and engagement before scaling acquisition.

What this demonstrates

An acquisition plan centered on user quality and the full app journey. This study uses a fictional brief and does not claim achieved installs, revenue, or return on investment.
